Detraining in Endurance Athletes

How Cardiovascular Variables Change

The sports science mini-lectures were born from a need to teach coaches and athletes how to apply sports science to their own coaching and training. We are passionate about coach education and sports performance. The lectures are easily digestible at 5 - 7 minutes in length.

The first episode of the mini-lecture series is on detraining. In essence you lose what you don't use! We go over how cardiovascular variables such as heart rate, cardiac output, and VO2 max change over time when athletes aren't training.

Exercise & the Immune System

A boost to the immune system that no pill can replace.

With the COVID-19 pandemic there was much discussion around whether training would negatively impact the immune system. As with all things physiology there is no simple yes or no answer. In short, consistent training over the long term boosts the immune system. Exercise really is wonderful! However, after really high intensity efforts such as a marathon race there is an 'open window' of time where you are more susceptible to developing an upper respiratory tract infection.
